In 2016, Google introduced the “Seamless Updates” feature for Android, which was quickly adopted by most Android OEMs except Samsung. Despite initial reluctance, Samsung introduced it with the Galaxy A55 last year. Now, around eight years later, the Korean tech giant has finally brought Android seamless updates to the Galaxy flagship phone, the Galaxy S25 series.
As per Samsung, the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25+, and Galaxy S25 Ultra have become the pioneer among Samsung flagship phones to integrate Google’s seamless updates feature. This feature is expected to cascade across a vaster range of Galaxy devices in the foreseeable future.
Galaxy S25 “Seamless Updates” feature
With the “Seamless Updates” feature, the update installs on partition B while you continue to use your phone on partition A. Once the installation is complete, all you need to do is restart your device.
This assures that your Galaxy device remains usable during the installation and is only unavailable for a short time during the restart. With this feature, the days of waiting several minutes for the entire installation process to finish before you can use your phone again are over.
In the shot, seamless updates allows you to download, verify, and install system updates without having to deal with long processes and multiple loading screens. These update processes happen in the background, so you only need to restart your device to start using the new Android version.
“Seamless updates” or A/B partitioning has to be set up from the factory and cannot be added later via a firmware update. Hence, it’s a good thing that the Galaxy S25 supports it. There’s no harm in having this feature.
With this announcement, Seamless updates are currently available on five Galaxy devices, including,
- Galaxy S25
- Galaxy S25+
- Galaxy S25 Ultra
- Galaxy A55
While older phones may not get this feature, seamless updates a.k.a. A/B partitions are expected to become standard on future Samsung Galaxy devices
